Operation Christmas Clean Up Recycling Event on Saturday, January 9
Published on December 31, 2020
The Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville (SWDA) and its curbside recycling program, Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA), in coordination with the City of Huntsville, Madison County, the City of Madison and Operation Green Team are hosting the Second Annual “Operation Christmas Clean Up” on January 9, 2021.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at two locations — Joe Davis Stadium (3125 Leeman Ferry Road) and the Madison City Schools Stadium (211 Celtic Drive).
“We’re excited to work alongside our local partners to bring this recycling opportunity to area residents the second year in a row,” said John “Doc” Holladay, Executive Director of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville. “After seeing the high amount of participation last year, we knew we needed to continue this tradition.”
Operation Christmas Clean Up is a collection event where area residents can recycle their Christmas trees, flattened and broken-down cardboard boxes, batteries, and old electronics. To recycle a live Christmas tree, participants must remove all lights and ornaments. Items that will not be accepted are artificial trees, wrapping paper and packaging materials (Styrofoam, plastic).
“While the holidays can be a wonderful time, they can also be a time to create more items than normal to be recycled,” said Jesse Davis, Environmental Awareness Officer of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville. “Our goal is to help area residents with a one-stop shop.”
“Christmas trees account for a lot of waste this time of year, and people rarely know how to properly dispose of them,” said Joy McKee, Director of Landscape Management. “This event is a great opportunity for people to clean up their home and keep the environment safe from contaminants for free.”
This will be the only opportunity to recycle Christmas trees in the City of Huntsville, City of Madison, and Madison County. In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled on Saturday, January 16.
