Inaugural Senior Fishing Rodeo April 20

The City’s Department of Parks and Recreation and the Huntsville-Madison County Senior Center are hosting an inaugural Senior Fishing Rodeo on Thursday, April 20, at 9 a.m., in Brahan Spring Park’s North Lagoon.
Seniors ages 55+ are invited to enjoy a free morning of fishing and camaraderie. The lagoon has been stocked with 300 pounds of catfish and is closed to the public until the morning of the event on April 20. Those fishing will need to bring their own fishing equipment, bait, and a fishing license if younger than 65 years old.
Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m., and fishing runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in the Park’s North Lagoon, located between the Miracle League playground and Everybody Can Play playground on Ivy Avenue. Registrants will be eligible for door prizes and the Senior Fishing Rodeo’s three top awards – Most Fish Caught, Biggest Fish Caught, and Oldest Person to Catch a Fish.
Ray Greene, Neighborhood Services Superintendent for Parks and Recreation, says the motivation to create a Senior Fishing Rodeo came from a City employee at the Max Luther Drive Community Center who “enjoyed working the Youth Fishing Rodeo every year and thought there should also be one for seniors.” Greene says he hopes that this event encourages seniors to remain active, especially outdoor activities.
