Huntsville Police Working to Protect Officers from Drug Exposure

The Huntsville Police Department is looking to make the job of narcotics agents safer through the purchase of Naloxone, better known as Narcan, thanks to a grant through the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program (HIDTA).

HIDTA is funded through the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and has regional drug task force units throughout the country.  The Huntsville Police Department manages the Madison-Morgan County Strategic Counterdrug Unit (STAC) which receives partial funding through HIDTA.  The unit is comprised of law enforcement officers from various agencies who investigate drug trafficking throughout Madison and Morgan County.

HIDTA will be reimbursing the costs of the Narcan for the STAC Unit as well as providing personal protective equipment for Agents working around and handling deadly fentanyl and its derivatives.  The opioid epidemic is affecting communities all over the country and north Alabama is no exception.  This grant will help protect the officers who are on the front line working to fight the opioid epidemic and rid it from our community.

The Huntsville City Council is set to vote on the approval of this grant at tonight’s regularly scheduled Council meeting.
