Huntsville Clerk-Treasurer Ken Benion announces Feb. 28 retirement

City of Huntsville Clerk-Treasurer Ken Benion announced he will retire Feb. 28, following a successful 13-year career directing three municipal departments during a time of unprecedented growth.
First tapped by Mayor Tommy Battle in 2010, Benion served as Program Fiscal Officer in Community Development before becoming the department’s Director. He acted as Interim Finance Director in 2015 before transitioning to Clerk-Treasurer the following year.
“I am grateful for this experience and for the opportunity to work with so many incredible people, both inside and outside City Hall,” said Benion. “I thank Mayor Battle for his confidence in me and for the honor to serve in his administration.”
A Birmingham native, Benion is a Certified Public Accountant and had more than 30 years of prior accounting experience before coming to Huntsville. He began his career in corporate America after graduating college and moved into government working with the cities of Birmingham and Fairfield in Jefferson County.Mayor Battle, also a Birmingham native, said he lured Benion to Huntsville where he could apply his strong finance and accounting skills.
“Ken excelled in everything we ever asked him to do,” Mayor Battle said. “He helped us grow to the next level and we wish him all the pleasures of a happy and well-deserved retirement.”
Mayor Battle named Shaundrika Edwards as Interim Clerk-Treasurer. Edwards is the City’s Human Resources Insurance and Benefits Manager.
