Huntsville board seeks nominations for Air Pollution Control Achievement Awards
Published on May 17, 2023
The City of Huntsville’s Air Pollution Control Board wants to recognize businesses or industries that are good stewards of our environment.
Through May 31, the board is accepting nominations for the 2023 Air Pollution Control Achievement Awards. Established in 1997, the program recognizes the voluntary efforts of industrial, commercial and institutional facilities that seek to improve Huntsville’s air quality. Winners are selected based on letters of nomination sent to the board.
“This program really complements the City’s other environmental sustainability initiatives,” said Darlene Duerr, Interim Director of Huntsville’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management. “We’re fortunate that many of our industries already take a proactive approach to protecting the environment, particularly where air quality is concerned.”
There are three award nomination categories:
Category 1 recognizes facilities that have implemented a project that reduces pollutants, including installing or upgrading emission control equipment or using fewer polluting raw materials in manufacturing processes.
Category 2 recognizes facilities that are planning or testing new emission control projects or are in the stages of early implementation. Since the results of the project are not yet known, winners would not receive an award until 2024. Instead, it acknowledges the project is deserving of recognition and assures an award will be conferred if the project is successfully implemented.
Category 3 recognizes facilities that have public outreach and education efforts on how to reduce emissions of air pollutants, including promoting carpooling or conducting workshops and seminars.
