Huntsville approves second phase of John Hunt Park Championship Fields

Published on May 26, 2022

The City Council voted Thursday to allow Mayor Tommy Battle to enter into an agreement with low bidder Gregory Construction Services, Inc., on the $15.7 million project. Per the contract, work will begin within 10 calendar days of the issuance of notice to proceed and take no longer than 400 days to complete.

Additions to the John Hunt Park Championship Fields will include two synthetic turf multipurpose fields, LED field lighting and accessories, two parking lots with hardscapes, sidewalks, irrigation and landscaping. The project will also feature a new press box and locker room building.

Huntsville Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett believes the additions will attract more tournaments and said the updated lighting will meet broadcast television standards. He added tournament organizers will appreciate the new press box and additional locker room space.

“The turf fields will provide flexibility to host lacrosse and soccer tournaments as well as improve our inventory of multiuse fields that serve our local leagues and clubs,” he said. “When complete, this complex will offer expanded seating capacities not available at our current turf fields.”

The addition is the latest effort to accommodate a growing interest in soccer and lacrosse. John Hunt Park Championship Fields, which includes two existing multipurpose fields, regularly hosts regional and state tournaments.
