Huntsville Animal Services seeks to ‘Clear the Shelter’ in August

Anyone in the market for an adult dog or cat can get one for free this month at Huntsville Animal Services as part of a nationwide “Clear the Shelters” adoption campaign.

Huntsville Animal Services Director Dr. Karen Sheppard said while no-cost adoptions through Aug. 31 are a great selling point, there are dozens of loveable pets in the shelter eagerly awaiting their next home.

Cat lovers and Auburn fans might be interested in Aubie , a 4-year-old orange and white female in need of a companion. Dog lovers should check out June Bug , a 3-year-old mixed breed recovering nicely after an unfortunate run-in with a vehicle. Under Sheppard’s care, June Bug is regaining her balance, getting stronger and showing off her kind personality.

Sheppard said stories like Aubie’s and June Bug’s are becoming common – too many pets coming and not enough being adopted, especially this time of year.

“We’re still seeing high numbers of unwanted pets in our shelter,” she said. “We see a higher intake in summer, but this year, the doors were blown off and we’re struggling.”

Animal Services is one of hundreds of organizations participating in “Clear the Shelters.” Last year, the campaign found homes for more than 161,000 pets – a new record. Sheppard hopes this year’s campaign beats those numbers.

While adoption fees have been waived on most adult pets, some exclusions apply. Adoptions include up-to-date vaccinations, a microchip for pet identification, spay or neuter surgery, a City license and free bag of dry pet food while supplies last.
