Hollywood legends’ causes benefit Huntsville Animal Services

Published on January 20, 2022

The philanthropic endeavors of two Hollywood legends recently provided Huntsville Animal Services (HAS) with additional funds to care for animals at the shelter and in foster care.

In December, HAS received $5,000 from the Doris Day Animal Foundation . The nonprofit organization, founded in 1978 as the Doris Day Pet Foundation, provides grants to animal rights groups and shelters to help cover senior pet care as well as spay/neuter efforts and veterinary expenses.

The foundation’s mission is “to help animals and the people who love them.”

HAS Director Dr. Karen Sheppard said the grant will help the shelter ensure humane treatment for eligible senior pets and those with a terminal illness, pending the results of a quality-of-life assessment. She praised volunteers who foster senior pets.

“It is sad when these older animals end up at the shelter,” Sheppard said. “We want them each to live the remainder of their life in a caring home with unconditional love and the necessary resources for their particular needs.”

Day, who died in 2019, was an actress and entertainer best known for her hit movies “Pillow Talk,” “The Thrill of It All” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Man Who Knew Too Much.” A 2020 auction of her memorabilia generated nearly $3 million for the Doris Day Animal Foundation.

Betty White Challenge

The Huntsville Animal Services Foundation also received more than $5,000 in donations recently in honor of comedic actress Betty White, who died Dec. 31. Best known for her work on the TV series “The Golden Girls,” White was also a tireless advocate for animal causes.

After her death, the #BettyWhiteChallenge began trending on social media to encourage donations to animal causes. A post to the HAS Facebook page on Jan. 17, which would have been White’s 100th birthday, generated over $5,000 in donations for the foundation.

“We certainly thank all those who donated as part of the #BettyWhiteChallenge,” Sheppard said. “White’s legacy of helping animals will live on for generations to come. We are happy to help further her mission here at Huntsville Animal Services.”
