Published on January 14, 2019
Mayor Tommy Battle joined fellow Healthy Huntsville partners at the Madison County Department of Public Health today to officially kick off Scale Back Alabama.
Representatives from the founding members of Healthy Huntsville were in attendance including Huntsville Hospital CEO David Spillers, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Public Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Carden, Madison County Department of Public Health Administrator Judy Smith and Huntsville City Schools Director of Community Engagement Rena Anderson.
“Using the momentum of the ‘Maintain Don’t Gain’ holiday challenge, with a total of 529 pounds lost, we are excited to begin Scale Back Alabama in the City of Huntsville,” said Mayor Tommy Battle.
Scale Back Alabama is a free program that encourages teams of two to lose weight (a goal of 10 pounds) from the end of January to the beginning of April. Teams of two most register to participate, as well as weigh-in and weigh-out at the same location.
There are many public weighing locations, including the three Huntsville Hospital Wellness Centers, Brahan Spring Recreation Center, Optimist Recreation Center, Showers Recreation Center and Fern Bell Recreation Center. To register your team, visit scalebackalabama.com or download their free app.
Jennifer Carden, Public Outreach Coordinator for the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology emphasized the importance of company culture when it comes to empowering healthy choices.
“Promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging our employees to participate in Scale Back Alabama are some of the ways that we live Healthy Huntsville’s mission of reducing obesity in Huntsville.”

Scale Back Alabama is designed to address the state’s challenge with obesity; however, we caution individuals to check with their health care provider before beginning a new exercise or diet regimen.
