Military honored
The new bridge on Old Madison Pike near Indian Creek Greenway, between Jan Davis and Slaughter Roads will be named the “Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge,” thanks to unanimous approval of the City Council. Advocates for the naming of the bridge to honor Korean War veterans were presented with a replica sign depicting what will be placed on the bridge.
Holmes Avenue Corridor
The City of Huntsville’s Planning Department is proposing upgrades of a 2.7-mile corridor on Holmes Avenue between downtown and the UAH campus that will connect the two areas with multiple transportation options, including bicycle lanes, pedestrian walkways and motor transportation.
The Council has given approval for the City to enter into an agreement with 4Site, Inc., for engineering design services on the project.
The corridor will have improved landscaping and irrigation and include transit stops, according to Dennis Madsen, Manager of Long-Range and Urban Planning. Madsen. It could also provide more access to jobs and services for residents.
“We really feel like it can do double- and triple-duty when we get it implemented,” Madsen said.
The plan would be “a pilot project” for similar ones in other neighborhoods.
Huntsville Police
Huntsville Police Officer Micah Alexander was presented an HPD Lifesaving Award. On April 13, he noticed a suspicious vehicle and discovered the driver had a trash bag around his neck in a suicide attempt. Alexander called paramedics, extricated the driver and was able to save the man’s life.
Construction updates
The Council approved an ordinance to annex 5.47 acres on the south side of Bob Wallace and South Parkway, formerly an industrial site. It will be demolished for new construction on the site.
Appointments
Elizabeth Dotts Fleming was nominated for appointment to the Historical Preservation Authority, with a term to expire June 3, 2022.
Joyce LeDuc-Hampton was nominated for reappointment to the Bingo Review Committee, with a term to expire April 8, 2019.
David Mathis was nominated for reappointment to the Huntsville-Madison County Marina and Port Authority, with a term to expire July 1, 2022.
William “Woody” Sanderson was nominated reappointed to the Madison County Communications District Board, with a term to expire April 30, 2021.
Upcoming
On June 13, the new Downtown Master Plan will be discussed in a council work session at 6 p.m., with a public reception prior to the event and a social to follow the work session.
The Becky Peirce Municipal Golf Course and its future use was again a major topic of discussion, with speakers on both sides of the issue – whether to re-open it as a golf course or as a multi-purpose facility. Council members will put the issue to a vote on June 22.
