City Council – Highlights from the February 8, 2018 Meeting

Annexations
Council approved the annexation of 2.59 acres of land east of Old Monrovia Road and south of Oakwood Road. The land will be used for a new addition to the 911 Center.
Urban Development
Approved a $92,578 contract with Garver, L.L.C. for engineering design services for the Ditto Landing Master Plan Update. Rerouting Campground Road, establishing new campground and retention ponds.
Authorized the City to retain Schneider Historic Preservation, L.L.C. to help establish McThornmor Acres on the National Register of Historic Places.
Approved a not-to-exceed $35,000 contract with Urban Design Associates for additional planning services in the Downtown Master Plan update. UDA will assist with additional design for streetscape improvements, bikeways, and modeling for the new City Hall.
Authorized the Mayor to retain Garber Construction Company L.L.C. for construction services to create the John Hunt Park Festival Grounds. Contract amount is $1,848,000.
Authorized an infrastructure contract related to the Mid City development for a new roadway, sanitary sewer, and box culvert with SJ&L General Contractor, L.L.C. Contract amount is $4,220,437.
Public Safety
Council voted to enter into a “memorandum of understanding” with Calhoun Community College to allow Huntsville police cadets the ability to earn college credit for criminal justice courses while training in the 18-week police academy. The agreement allows 16- to 18-year-old students to also earn college credit during training in the three-year police Ranger program.
Public Hearings to be set
The Council voted to set a public hearing on an ordinance to rezone 77 acres on Green Mountain to Residence 1-A District. The public hearing will be held during the regular Council meeting on April 26 at 6 p.m.
A public hearing was also set for April 26 on an ordinance zoning 2,370.89 acres of newly annexed land for the Toyota-Mazda project.
Board Appointments
Mayor Tommy Battle reappointed Bert Peake, Fred Coffee, and Kimberly Ford to the Board of Zoning Adjustment for three-year terms to expire March 9, 2021.
The Mayor also reappointed Brenda Martin to a four-year term to expire in April 2022 on the Huntsville-Madison County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Board of Directors.
