Celebrate Earth Day at Hays Nature Preserve, Saturday, April 22

Published on April 14, 2023

Attendees will enjoy earth-friendly exhibitors with informative and interactive educational displays, vegetable plant giveaways, face painting, live music from Alli and Christy, free hot dogs and cotton candy. Children will delight in seeing farm animals, interacting with adoptable pets from Huntsville Animal Services, and fishing at Bar Lake with poles and bait provided. Those interested in taking home a bit of the festival will also enjoy free cucumber and tomato plants, while supplies last.

The ever-popular raptor demonstrations will be presented by the Southeastern Raptor Center.  Based at Auburn University, the nonprofit center provides medical care and rehabilitation to injured and orphaned wildlife.

“Earth Day allows us to reconnect with nature and to recognize the importance of caring for our planet, said Brian Walker, Director of Landscape Management. “We are fortunate to live in a region with significant biodiversity. Green Team’s mission is to educate the public on the many ways we can help protect our environment, and Earth Day offers a fun and enjoyable way to highlight our role as good stewards of our community.”

The Earth Day celebration is a great opportunity to learn about joining community cleanups this spring and summer. Green Team staff will be available Saturday to provide information on opportunities throughout the year, such as Adopt-A-Mile, Adopt-A-Spot, Adopt-A-Stream and other cleanups to help improve natural spaces in our community.

Also please note, Hays Nature Preserve will be closed to the public Friday, April 21 to prepare for Earth Day.

Parking will be limited at Hays Nature Preserve during Earth Day festivities, but parking is available at the Mark Russell Recreation Center, 429 Taylor Road . Huntsville Transit will pick up attendees from the Mark Russell Center and take them to Hays Nature Preserve. Signs will note drop off/pickup locations.
