Roadway Improvement Projects
The City is responsible for the next phase of construction on Winchester Road. This phase contains 2.25 miles of new five-lane roadway to connect to the recently completed portion constructed by the County. The right-of-way acquisition schedule continues to change due to new development/ownership along this growth corridor. Any changes to properties within this area require new legal descriptions and appraisals. Assuming acquisition can be completed this fall, utility relocations will begin shortly thereafter and take 6-9 months to complete. Roadway construction should be bid by ALDOT late this year and take 18 months to complete. However, the roadway construction schedule is heavily dependent upon acquisition and utility relocations.Updated April 9, 2024
The roadway construction was let by ALDOT in September 2023. The contract will be awarded to the low bidder, Rogers Group Inc. The roadway construction will be performed with a detour route in place for motorists to use Trademark Drive to maintain two-way traffic during construction. Construction will begin in April 2024 and take approximately two years to complete.

Contractor Rogers Group is set to start work in June 2023. Initially, the contractor will install temporary barriers along the outer (east) side of the northbound roadway, reducing it to two lanes for northbound traffic from Mastin Lake Road to the Stallworth Road entrance to Alabama A&M University.
During the first phase of the project, traffic will be shifted to the inside lanes of the existing roadway for construction of northbound and southbound service roads. During the second phase, traffic will be shifted to the newly-constructed service roads while the overpass and mainline are constructed in the center. The project is anticipated to take more than three years to complete. Motorists should expect delays and drive with caution in the 2-mile work zone.
