Parks & Recreation offers swim lessons at the Huntsville Aquatics Center and the indoor pool at the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Center. Class schedules change seasonally and are posted on the Aquatics Center and Showers Center swim lessons calendars.

Showers Pool

Fall 2024 swim lessons will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Aug. 27 to Sept. 19 at the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Center pool, 4600 Blue Springs Road, Huntsville. The fee to participate is $75 per session.

Registration will begin Aug. 13 at 8 a.m.

Class Descriptions

Parent-Child Aquatics

Level 1-2 Introduction to Water SkillsAn entry-level lesson that builds basic water safety skills for both parents and children, helping infants and children ages 6 months to 3 years become comfortable in the water. As the child progresses they will learn more advanced skills.


Preschool Aquatics

Level 1-Introduction to Water SkillsAn entry-level lesson that gives children ages 4-5 a positive aquatic learning experience that emphasizes water safety, survival and fundamental swimming concepts. Children will learn age-appropriate skills that will help them feel comfortable and enjoy the water safely.

Level 2-Fundemental Aquatic SkillsChildren ages 4-5 may be registered for this class if they have completed Preschool Aquatics Level 1 or if they can successfully complete the following skills:

  • Enter and exit the water independently
  • Submerge and blow bubbles for 3 seconds
  • Glide on front for two body lengths
  • Roll onto back, float for 3 seconds and recover

Level 3-Stroke DevelopmentChildren ages 4-5 can register for this class if they have completed Preschool Aquatics Level 2 or if they can successfully complete the following skills:

  • Glide on front two body lengths and roll to back
  • Float on back for 15 seconds and recover
  • Glide on back for two body lengths and roll to front
  • Swim three body lengths, roll to back and float 15 seconds
  • Roll to front and swim three body lengths

Learn to Swim

Level 1- Introduction to Water SkillsAn entry-level lesson for children ages 6-12 that helps them to become more comfortable in the water. Participants will learn fundamental aquatic skills and how to be safe in and around water.

Level 2-Fundemental Aquatic SkillsChildren ages 6-12 can register for this class if they have completed Learn to Swim Level 1 or if they can successfully complete the following skills:

  • Enter and exit the water independently
  • Submerge and bob five times
  • Front glide two body lengths, roll and float 5 seconds
  • Recover from a horizontal to a vertical position

Level 3 -Stroke DevelopmentChildren ages 6-12 can register for this class if they have completed Learn to Swim Levels 1-2 or if they can successfully complete the following skills:

  • Step into chest deep water and push off bottom
  • Tread or float for 15 seconds
  • Swim on front and/or back five body lengths and exit
  • Back float for 15 seconds, roll to front and recover
  • Glide and swim five body lengths and roll to back
  • Float 15 seconds, roll to front and swim five body lengths

Level 4-5 Stroke Improvement & RefinementChildren ages 6-12 can register for this class if they have completed Learn to Swim Level 3 or if they can successfully complete the following skills:

  • Jump into deep water and recover to the surface
  • Maintain position by treading or floating 1 minute
  • Rotate one full turn, find an exit and level off
  • Swim freestyle/elementary backstroke 25 yards
  • Glide (streamlined) and swim freestyle 15 yards
  • Change direction and elementary backstroke 15 yards

Adult Beginner-Introduction to Water SkillsAn entry-level lesson for participants ages 12 and older. This class emphasizes water safety, survival and fundamental swimming concepts. Participants will learn skills that will help them feel comfortable so they can enjoy the water safely.
