Great news for electric vehicle fans: 12 new Tesla Superchargers will be installed at MidCity District next year.
The Huntsville City Council recently approved a contract between the City of Huntsville and Tesla to bring Superchargers to the former Madison Square Mall property by 2022. Tesla Superchargers, a direct current fast-charging technology designed to get drivers back on the road quickly, are available in only a few Alabama cities at this time.
MidCity will be Tesla’s first Supercharger station in Huntsville. For Huntsvolt cofounder Daniel Horton, Tesla’s decision to locate in the up-and-coming MidCity District was a no-brainer.
“We all know Huntsville is a tech-forward city, so the fast adoption of Teslas and other electric vehicles is no surprise,” he said. “Being able to charge in the center of town at a growing hot spot is a win-win for everyone involved.”
‘Amazing’ response
Since Council adopted the resolution on Sept. 9, RCP Companies Business Development Manager Nadia Niakossary said the community’s response has been “amazing.”
“We have a very engaged EV community in Huntsville, which has held EV meetups and info sessions at MidCity,” she said. “The closest Superchargers in the area – that can fuel up to 200 miles in 15 minutes – are currently in Athens, so having Superchargers in proximity to the main employment centers in Huntsville will be an added impetus for those thinking of going electric.”
RCP, which is developing MidCity, said the addition of Tesla Superchargers reinforces its mission to connect people across the region through music, art, food and technology.
By having Superchargers at the doors of the District, Niakossary said EV drivers will be able to walk, shop and dine at MidCity while they wait for their cars to charge.
“Collaborating with brands like Tesla that are changing the world will help Huntsville become a greater place to live as well,” she said.
Sustainability efforts
While the new Tesla Superchargers are a big win for MidCity, Niakossary said it’s just one of many ongoing sustainability initiatives at the University Drive development.
From designing an urban farming landscape master plan to creating renewable energy via solar panel systems, Niakossary said RCP works closely with the City to incorporate sustainability into every project at MidCity.
“We strive for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification on our residential projects, which is the most widely used green building rating system in the world,” she said. “We’re also under predevelopment design for the Southeast’s first environment, social and governance (ESG)-focused living experience with the goal of cutting the carbon footprint of building supplies.”

When the new 8,000-seat amphitheater comes online in 2022, there will be even more to look forward to at MidCity. Managed by Huntsville Venue Group, the outdoor attraction will support top talent and showcase community events such as farmers markets, a food hall, craft fairs, educational events and more.
Niakossary said the amphitheater is another example of implementing sustainability into all facets of a project.
“The Huntsville Amphitheater has a great Green Hands Initiative that will be incorporated throughout the District, too,” she said. “We will be working closely with Venue Group on public engagement programs to push the sustainability envelope in this region.”
