SUMMARY

This is a City-led project as part of Restore Our Roads consisting of 3.4 miles of a new four-lane divided highway and 1 mile of roadway improvements along North Parkway to accommodate for this new intersection.

The Northern Bypass is designed to be part of the City’s future “loop” road, improving and connecting Research Park Boulevard to Martin Luther King Boulevard, Bob Wade Lane, North Memorial Parkway, to Winchester Road, U.S. 72 East, U.S. 431 South, Cecil Ashburn Drive, and South Memorial Parkway.

STATUS

The City of Huntsville awarded a contract to Wiregrass Construction Company on Nov. 2, 2023, to construct the Northern Bypass. Construction began in mid-November 2023 with an estimated construction time of three years, weather permitting. This will include 1 mile of road improvements along U.S. 231 (Memorial Parkway) to accommodate the new intersection. The construction total for the project is $34,695,598.29 with 498 working days to complete the work. Approximately 43% total time has been charged, and the project is approximately 21% complete. Anticipated completion for the project is the end of 2026, weather permitting.

The site has been cleared, and construction on three of the four bridge culverts is complete. Blasting is occurring regularly on the western end of the project near Northgate Drive. Gas relocation is complete. Water, sewer, electric and communication relocations are also underway. Sitework, to include grading and drainage installation, is progressing on both sides of Memorial Parkway and working west along Bob Wade Lane. There will be single lane closures along the Parkway as work progresses to widen Memorial Parkway to accommodate the new intersection. Anticipate traffic shifts as work progresses with the new signal at Memorial Parkway and the Northern Bypass being installed in the spring of 2025. The existing signal at Memorial Parkway and Bob Wade Lane will also be removed when the new signal is installed.
