EARTH DAY HISTORY

The global observation of Earth Day on April 22 is now in its 54th year of commemorating the day many historians recognize as the birth of the modern environmental movement. Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, helped organize a nationwide grassroots celebration on April 22, 1970, that eventually included more than 20 million people. Earth Day remains a watershed event in the environmental movement.
