RECORDS DIVISION

The Records Division of the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) manages and produces police-related information and documents for criminal justice purposes per legal reporting requirements (Alabama Code Title 13A – Criminal Code). The division is a 24/7 operation and is accessible to the public during business hours, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Records Division maintains all traffic accident reports and criminal case reports.

Background checks for employment may be requested from HPD’s ID Department, which is located within the Records Division.  These requests should be made in person at 815 Wheeler Avenue during business hours (Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.).  The cost is $5 – $10, cash, credit card or check, payable to the City of Huntsville.  You must present a valid ID at the time of the request.  Please call (256) 427-7128 for more information.

Effective October 1, 2018, all civilian requests for crime statistics (for example: moving to a new location in Huntsville) will need to be routed to the Community Resource Officer in the respective precincts. This is referring specifically to the requests where citizens want crime statistics on an area or piece of property.

All other requests for crime statistics (i.e. businesses, other law enforcement, government agencies, etc.) should be routed to Crime Analyst’s office. The Crime Analysts office is located in the Criminal Investigation Division, and the phone number is 256-883-3721.

Criminal case report copies may be purchased from the Records Division, located at 815 Wheeler Avenue, during business hours (Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.).  * You must be the listed victim or reporting partyon the report to obtain a copy and will need to provide the following information when you request your copy:

1) Valid ID

2) Case report number

3) Date and location of the incident

4) Reason for obtaining the report

*If you are listed as anything other than the victim or reporting party on a report you must have the record subpoenaed to obtain a full copy of the report.

The cost is $10, cash, credit card, or check only, payable to the City of Huntsville.

Requests for fingerprinting may be made to HPD’s ID Department for a limited list of entities (see list below); the ID Department is located within the Records Division.  Please check the list below to ensure we print for your agency/cause.  Calling ahead is recommended for these requests.  The cost is $10 per card unless otherwise noted below.  Please call 256-427-7128 for more information.

The MCSO Annex prints Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The cost is $10 per card, and the requesting individual must provide the card(s).

The wrecker service currently contracted to complete vehicle towing and impoundments on behalf of the Huntsville Police Department is Roadside Towing.  Roadside Towing may be reached at (256) 533-0809 for all impound information.

For inmate information or to contact the jail, call 256-519-4800.  This is the phone number for the Madison County Jail. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office runs this facility and processes all inmates in Madison County, which includes the City of Huntsville.
