Man Charged after Fatal Hit-and-Run in Parking Lot

Huntsville Police have charged 20 year old Jarquez Petty of Madison, with felony Leaving the Scene of an Accident.  The accident resulted in the death of 60 year old John Atkins of Huntsville.

The accident happened in the parking lot of 1450 Sparkman Drive on Tuesday, shortly after 5:00 p.m.  Mr. Atkins was walking in the parking lot when he was struck by a Nissan Sentra driven by Petty.  Petty left the scene but witnesses were able to get a tag number and vehicle description that helped officers track down the vehicle.  Petty was charged with felony Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Mr. Atkins died today in the hospital as a result of his injuries.  The accident is still under investigation and additional charges could be filed.
