Huntsville Police urge safety for New Year’s celebrations

Published on December 27, 2024

As the New Year approaches, the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is reminding residents to celebrate responsibly while also adhering to the City’s fireworks ordinance.

The updated ordinance, amended by the City Council in 2023 , permits the use, sale and purchase of nonexplosive, non-aerial sparkling devices within City limits. Ground-based and handheld sparkling devices are allowed, but explosive and aerial fireworks are prohibited.

To help everyone enjoy a safe and peaceful New Year, avoid discharging fireworks after 10 p.m. and follow these simple guidelines:

  • Keep water ready to promptly extinguish stray fireworks
  • Aim fireworks away from others, pets and structures to prevent injuries and property damage
  • If a firework fails to ignite, do not attempt to relight it. Douse it with water and dispose of it safely.
  • Never allow children to light fireworks or handle them without adult supervision. Consider safer alternatives like sparklers under close supervision.
  • Avoid using fireworks under the influence of alcohol.

By celebrating responsibly, everyone can enjoy a safe and festive New Year’s holiday.
