City Opens 4th Dog Park in Hampton Cove

The City of Huntsville opened its fourth dog park today in the Hampton Cove area. The property, at 265 Wade Road, backs up to the greenway at the Hays Nature Preserve and provides a beautiful play area for dogs to run along with picnic tables and sunshades for the pet owners. There is a divided area for large and small dogs and water access for the thirsty canines.
“Thanks to Mayor Battle and his administration for listening to the citizens of this area who are asking for more recreational opportunities to complement the already outstanding parks and greenway trails,” said District 2 Council Member Mark Russell. “This dog park, along with Cove Park, Hays Nature Preserve, Goldsmith Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary and the Big Cove Creek Greenway, are excellent examples of city infrastructure that improve the quality of life for our citizens.”
Parks and Recreation Director Steve Ivey said the park is part of his department’s plan to expand offerings throughout the City. “We have numerous requests for dog parks, and we are proud to be able to provide this park for our Hampton Cove residents, especially in an area where we can tie into additional recreational options.”
The dog park cost $50,000 to build. Mayor Tommy Battle believes it is money well spent.
“You can tell a lot about a city by the number of and quality of its parks and public spaces,” said Mayor Battle. “We are committed to improving and developing our parks and greenways into places that our citizens, and our pets, will enjoy for generations to come.”
