City Council – Meeting Highlights from August 10, 2017
Published on August 11, 2017
City Council voted unanimously to rename the site of the former Grissom High School property on Bailey Cove Road as the Sandra Moon Community Complex. Moon, one of the Council’s most popular and highly regarded members during her tenure, served as District 3 Council Member from 1998 to 2010. The South Huntsville Library complex was one of her goals but she did not live to see her dream fulfilled. Moon died of cancer in 2013.
Council President Jennie Robinson proposed the honor, and offered personal reflections on Moon’s extensive community service and role as mentor. Remembering Ms. Moon, Mayor Battle said, “She had the heart of a true public servant. Every time we drive down by the Moon complex, I will think everyone will remember what public service is all about and someone who wanted to do something good for their community.”
Infrastructure
Council voted to approve a residential road resurfacing agreement with the low bidder, Reed Contracting Services, for $2.966,444.59.
Authorized a $1,936,277 agreement for the low bidder, Reed Contracting Services, for the Redstone Gateway Boulevard Extension (300 feet of new roadway) and Rideout Road Signalized Intersection.
Approved an agreement valued at $614,829.60 with the low bidder, SJ&L General Contractor for the Redstone Square Drive project – 600 feet of 4-lane divided roadway at Martin Road and Zeirdt.
Authorized an agreement with Croy Engineering for landscape architectural and engineering design services for the Dry Creek Greenway, Phase 1, from Biltmore Drive to Providence.
Housing
Council approved contracts with Family Services to use HOME INVESTMENT Partnership Funds to construct affordable homes at 2713 and 2715 Wilson Drive.
Municipal Court Judgeship Vacancy
Council approved a resolution authorizing them to appoint two new full-time judges to serve Municipal Court. President Jennie Robinson announced the City had received 26 applications for a vacant judgeship position, and this decision will allow the court to properly resource the court with three full-time judges as the community grows. Municipal Court has been operating with one full-time judge and one part-time judge since the retirement of Presiding Judge Sonny Rodenhauser last year.
