On September 8, Dr. Caroline Swope, Principal of Kingstree Studios Cultural Resource Management, will present her findings after a year-long survey of one of Huntsville’s most historically significant mid-century neighborhoods.
This survey is Part I of the two-part process to list Edmonton Heights to the National Register of Historic Places and was funded through a grant from the Alabama Historical Commission with matching funds from the City of Huntsville, Normal Historic District Preservation Association and the Edmonton Heights Neighborhood Association.
Constructed in 1959, Edmonton Heights was one of the few neighborhoods in Huntsville where African Americans were allowed to live and purchase property. The devastation of the Urban Renewal program during the 1960s brought in displaced African American residents from the heart of downtown and Edmonton Heights became a refuge for many black citizens. Home to families and community leaders, this neighborhood is one of the largest repositories of African American history in Huntsville.
Edmonton Heights provided Huntsville’s black community with a sense of identity and unity. Edmonton Heights has a valuable story that should be recognized and preserved.
The presentation is open to the public.
