Celebrate Parks & Recreation Month in July

Published on June 26, 2020

Mayor Tommy Battle and Huntsville Parks & Recreation Director Steve Ivey are excited to kick-off Parks & Recreation Month as part of the National Recreation and Park Association’s (NRPA) national campaign on Friday, June 26 at 10 a.m. in Brahan Spring Park.

“This year, we want to highlight the numerous ways our department provides services and activities for the community,” Ivey said. “We are particularly excited to introduce the public to the many new recreation activities we’ve created.”

Huntsville’s parks and recreation services are an essential component of the community’s physical and mental wellbeing. Through this year’s theme, “ We Are Parks and Recreation ,” the department will explore its diverse offerings and recognize the team of professionals working to serve and support public play opportunities. They will turn the spotlight on dedicated volunteers and partner organizations and publish stories from citizens who regularly use park amenities.

“Parks, greenways, athletic leagues and recreation centers are a big part of what we refer to as our quality of life, and we think Huntsville has a lot to be proud of in this area,” Battle said. “With 65 + parks, 11 recreation centers (soon to be 14), 8 youth athletic leagues, 2 aquatics facilities, 3 splash pads and 4 dog parks, there’s truly something for everyone.”

Why it matters

COVID-19 has shone a light on the essential role of local parks and recreation play in the wellbeing of our community. In response to the pandemic, park and recreation professionals worked quickly to keep parks, trails and green spaces open to support the physical and mental health of residents while delivering vital services and programs to support the community.

NRPA and the City of Huntsville are dedicated to championing park and recreation professionals, advocates and decision-makers to bring needed investment, recognition and dedication to sustain these important spaces and services.

Parks & Recreation Month helps to provide the community with all of the information they need to enjoy the City’s parks and recreation amenities.
