Huntsville Reports Crime Decrease in 2020

The Huntsville Police Department is reporting a significant decrease in crime across the City in 2020. Preliminary reports indicate homicides dropped 26%, burglaries 19%, automotive break-ins 11%, and robberies 31%. The lower rates contradict others within the region reporting an increase in violent offenses last year. This week agents with the North Alabama Drug Task Force (NADTF) seized illegal drugs and guns off the streets in North Alabama. During the course of several drug investigations, agents seized more than 20 pounds of marijuana, 2.7 pounds of methamphetamine, 79 grams of cocaine, 35 grams of heroin, 21 grams of MDMA, 19 grams of fentanyl, and 7 bottles of steroids. Huntsville Police along with the U.S. Marshal Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force and Talladega Sheriff’s Department arrested Twenty-one yr old Lemond Lawerance Burns. He was arrested in Vestavia Hills, Al and transported to the Madison County Jail. He is charged with Capital Murder. Agents with the North Alabama HIDTA Drug Task Force recently conducted an investigation which resulted in a large seizure of illicit narcotics. Agents were able to recover over 2.7 pounds of cocaine, 283 grams of methamphetamine (ice), over $23,000 in currency, and one handgun. The estimated street value of the narcotics seized is $150,000. The Huntsville Police Anti – Crime Team along with the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force arrested 23yr old D’Marcus Derwell Bibbs for an outstanding murder warrant. The arrest occurred yesterday in the area of 3100 block Greenhill Drive. When Bibbs was arrested he was also charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon Without a Permit, two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree. The U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 23 year old Ro’daryus Mitchell and 18 year old Jae’ Vontea on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. Ro’daryus is being charged with 10 counts of Unlawful Breaking and Entering (B&Es) to a vehicle and Jae’ Vontea is being charged with 5 counts of Unlawful B&Es to a vehicle. Huntsville Police responded to a shooting on Poplar Ave. November 19th at approximately 9:15pm. Upon officers arrival a shooting victim was found inside the business at 708 Poplar Ave. The victim was transported to the hospital and later pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as 18 yr old Deandre Denzel Arrington of Huntsville. Anyone with information about this shooting is encouraged to Huntsville Police at 256-427-7270.
