Statement on Confederate Monument Relocation

The City of Huntsville, at the request of the Madison County Commission, is in the process of relocating the monument of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan from the Madison County Courthouse to a site near the Confederate burial section at Maple Hill Cemetery. More than 10 years after Huntsville resident Eric Obermann lost his life to the fatal disease ALS, the City of Huntsville is honored to dedicate a new forest on Aldridge Creek Greenway in his memory. At approximately 10:30 p.m. on October 16th, Huntsville Police officers responded to a 911 call at 2111 Edinburgh Drive. Upon arrival, they were confronted by Alberto Rivas, 57 years of age, who pointed a handgun at them. One officer fired, striking Mr. Rivas. For the 12th time in 12 years, since Mayor Battle first assumed office, Moody’s Investors Service and Standard & Poor’s Rating Services awarded Huntsville triple-A credit ratings.
