District 2 citizens had an opportunity this week to learn about a significant mixed-use development proposed at the intersection of Cecil Ashburn Drive and Old Big Cove Road.
Hosted by Council Member David Little, the come-and-go session featured representatives with T2 Capital Management LLC, Urban Design Associates, Schoel Engineering and Matheny-Goldmon Architecture + Interiors.
“The Cove community was pleased with the vision presented by our partners and appreciated the opportunity to share input on what the new development could be,” Little said. “The plan now is for everyone to digest the input and convene again in August to review more finalized plans based on feedback from last night.”
According to plans presented Wednesday night, the development could:
- Create distinct neighborhoods with a diversity of uses/housing types
- Create an active environment with proximity to shops, work, recreation and businesses
- Create a walkable village featuring shops, cafes and small businesses with apartments above
- Surround the village center with single-family neighborhoods that include a mix of attached and detached houses
- Create a village park system that features native plants and creek restoration
- Connect neighborhood parks to the regional greenway system, specifically Blevins Gap Nature Preserve to the west and Big Cove Creek Greenway to the east
- Design architecture that reflects the region’s traditions
- Design public space that is accessible, highly sociable and attractive to a diverse population
